An Update on New Bedford Politics With Jack Spillane [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]
We are always ready to welcome Jack Spillane to Townsquare Sunday. After a long career with the Standard-Times, Spillane is now a columnist for New Bedford Light, a new online publication providing in-depth stories mainly involving the City of New Bedford.
Spillane joined us this week to review the recent municipal election in New Bedford, and also to talk about the recent redrawing of Congressional districts in Southeastern Massachusetts.
First, the election: the November 2 voting produced several surprises, including the upset win of newcomer Ryan Pereira bouncing incumbent Ward Six Councilor Joseph Lopes, and Shane Burgo emerging from a formidable field of challengers to capture the councilor at large seat left vacant by the retirement of Debra Coelho.

During our conversation on Townsquare Sunday, Spillane credited Pereira's victory to hard work, and endorsements by some prominent business people in the South End. Spillane believes Burgo's victory in the at-large race can be traced to his progressive stance on key issues like gentrification, COVID vaccines, and putting people first.
Jack also said he found the redistricting issue fascinating. While elected officials in New Bedford believe having Fall River and New Bedford in the 9th Congressional District will benefit both communities, a group of Fall River pols say they're ready to tie in with Newton and Brookline, and become the largest community in the 4th District. A final vote is expected soon on Beacon Hill.
Jack Spillane will be a periodic contributor to Townsquare Sunday. Our latest conversation is here:
