9 Candidates Line Up to Fill Vacancy on New Bedford Board of Assessors

NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A former longtime city councilor, the son of a current city councilor, and the former director of the New Bedford Housing Authority are among the nine candidates to fill the vacancy on the city’s Board of Assessors.

Marty Treadup Retirement Sparks Board Vacancy

Longtime Assessor Marty Treadup recently announced he would be retiring. New Bedford City Council President Ryan Pereira then requested those interested in serving on the board to submit letters of interest and resumes to the City Clerk by June 30.

Treadup was in the middle of a six-year term after being re-elected in 2023.

City Ordinance Dictates Temporary Appointment Process

The New Bedford City Code of Ordinances calls for the city council to elect someone to fill the vacancy on the board. Per the ordinance, that person will “fill said vacancy temporarily until the first Monday in January following the next regular municipal election. The vacancy shall be permanently filled at such regular municipal election for the balance of the unexpired term.”

The council will hold a Special Meeting on Thursday, July 16 at 6 p.m. to elect someone to fill the vacancy.

• Realtor Maria A. Fontes, 210 Irvington Street
• Former City Councilor Linda M. Morad, 4162 Acushnet Avenue
• Richard T. Porteus, Jr., 800 Pleasant Street, Apartment 601

Councilor Carney Won't Participate in the Meeting

Carney is the son of current City Councilor Naomi Carney, who said this week on SouthCoast Now with Chris McCarthy that she won’t be at that meeting because she would have to recuse herself from the vote and that she will not lobby her colleagues on behalf of her son.

Board members earn a salary of $20,291.
