Dartmouth Cultural Center Unveils Packed Summer Lineup of Art Exhibits and Workshops

"Creativity Gathers Here" is the theme of a host of workshops this summer at the Dartmouth Cultural Center on Elm Street. The workshops begin this month with programs for both adults and kids.

Center President Pauline Santos recently announced the workshops in a press release. She stopped by Townsquare Sunday to preview the summer programs and explain two new exhibits in July and August.

"We have two people who have been instrumental in community outreach and getting these workshops up and running," Santos said. "Board member Mary Lou Frias and Melissa Haskell have been doing a great job in spreading the word about what the Dartmouth Cultural Center is all about."

Creative Art Workshops for Adults and Kids

The adult courses include one on writing letters to and from our ancestors, the art of Japanese resist dyeing, painting your own coastal clutch (small handbag), and a watercolor workshop. The classes range from $30 to $140 and begin next week. You can register at dartmouthculturalcenter.org.

Low-Cost Kids Crafts and Annual Scavenger Hunt

The one-day workshops for kids are low-cost at just $5 and start next week as well. They include: Magic Sun Prints: Art Made with Sunshine, a craft lab held every Monday evening through August 10, Junk to Genius, Backpack Swag and more. Registration is also available on the website.

The Dartmouth Cultural Center is teaming with businesses in South Dartmouth to stage a scavenger hunt for children August 24-29. "This is the third year we've been doing this," Santos said. "All of the businesses are excited about it."

Santos said the scavenger hunt is the brainchild of board member Beverly Pusateri, a former teacher and principal. "She always comes up with good ideas," Santos said.

National Art Exhibits and Floral Collaborations

There are two new exhibits happening this summer at the cultural center. Artwork from members of the National Association of Women Artists will be on display from July 10 to August 15. The exhibit will include more than 50 pieces from artists from all over the country.

The second exhibit is titled "Members and Flowers." Paintings from members of the Cultural Center will be on display from August 23 to August 29. Members of the Garden Club of Greater New Bedford will join in the festivities, creating floral arrangements to "enhance" the artwork on August 29.

Extended Summer Hours on Elm Street

The Dartmouth Cultural Center is open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, the center will have extended hours on Fridays and be open until 6 p.m. through the month of August.
