New Bedford Police Sergeant Recognized by Boston Bruins [VIDEO]
Sgt. Michael Cassidy, the longtime and beloved member of the New Bedford Police Department who passed away after a battle with COVID-19, was recognized this past week by the Boston Bruins.
Cassidy died on April 28 at the age of 52.
During Thursday’s telecast of the Bruins’ 4-0 win over the New York Rangers, Bruins play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards took advantage of a break in the action to pay tribute to Sgt. Cassidy, as seen in the video below with thanks to NESN:
“Tonight we share our grief over Sgt. Michael Cassidy of the New Bedford Police Department, who passed away from COVID-19 at the age of 52,” Edwards said. “Sgt. Cassidy served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a heartfelt Bruins fan all his life. He meant a lot to a lot of people in the Bruins organization and his family carries on his legacy. We send our sympathy and our best wishes to them.”
Cassidy was a 1986 graduate of Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School. He then enlisted in the Marines, serving in Operation Desert Storm.
In 1994, he joined the New Bedford Police Department, and over the course of his career received three life-saving awards and was honored many times for both his military and police service, including recognition from the United States Senate and the American Red Cross Real Heroes Award.
Cassidy’s visiting hours will be held Monday, May 10 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals at 495 Park Street in New Bedford. His funeral mass will be Tuesday, May 11 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 230 Bonney Street in New Bedford, followed by burial in Acushnet Cemetery. Due to capacity limitations, the Mass will be livestreamed on the Facebook page of his wife, Debbie Cassidy.
