New Bedford Police arrest two people and find nearly $90,000 and drugs as a result of a raid in a housing development in the city.

Police carried out a search warrant Monday evening as a result of an investigation at 182 Chancery street, located in the Temple Landing Housing Development. As a result of the raid, police found seven pounds of marijuana, packaging materials, and $38,000 in cash in the home. Police also executed an additional search warrant Tuesday for a safety deposit box, and seized $50,000 in cash.

Police arrested 41-year-old Victor Irving Rivera and 49-year-old Mary Luz Arroyo, both of 182 Chancery Street.

Rivera faces charges of possession with intent to distribute class “D” (marijuana), conspiracy to violate the controlled substance laws, and possession with intent to distribute class “D” subsequent offense.

Arroyo is charged with possession with intent to distribute class "D" (marijuana), and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance laws.

Both Rivera and Arroyo were receiving Social Security Income (SSI) benefits and living in subsidized housing while possessing $88,000 and over seven pounds of marijuana.

New Bedford Police tell WBSM News the Narcotics Division is working with federal authorities to determine if federal charges will be filed against the pair for illegally storing cash in a safe deposit box. Police are also working with State officials to determine if the pair received SSI benefits under false pretenses, and if the State will seek reimbursement.
