New Bedford Police Confirm ‘Suspicious Item’ Was a Bomb
NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford police confirmed the bomb scare on Mosher Street earlier today was, in fact, an improvised exploding device that was detonated safely without incident.
Police said that at 6:45 a.m., officers in the South End responded to 65 Mosher St. about a possible bomb.
They found a suspicious device on the porch near the front door and called the fire department and fire inspector to the scene.
Shortly afterwards, the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad arrived on scene, along with the Explosive Ordnance Navy team out of Newport, Rhode Island.
Crews used X-ray imaging to analyze the item, which was then confirmed to be an improvised exploding device.
Residents in the immediate area were evacuated, and safety precautions put in place as crews conducted a controlled detonation.
Police said the device was successfully destroyed without incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
