NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford Police arrested a city man and took a firearm off the street following a moped crash Tuesday.

Crash at Parker and Cottage Streets

According to police, Officer Calob Jardin responded to a motor vehicle crash on December 30 at the intersection of Parker Street and Cottage Street. He arrived to find that a moped traveling south on Cottage Street had failed to stop at a stop sign and struck another vehicle. The driver of the moped, identified as Kaydence Andrade, 18, of New Bedford, fled the scene on foot.

Firearm Recovered After Suspect Flees Scene

Andrade was located and allegedly found in possession of a defaced Walther P22 pistol loaded with nine rounds. Since he does not possess a license to carry, Andrade was arrested and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a serial number and without a license.

Police Highlight Ongoing Moped Enforcement Efforts

“This incident highlights the importance of the NBPD’s ongoing, focused enforcement efforts targeting illegal moped and scooter activity across the city, aimed at improving roadway safety and addressing broader public safety and quality-of-life concerns,” police said in a release.

According to police, the department conducted “sustained enforcement operations addressing unregistered and unlawfully operated mopeds and scooters” from November 7 through December 30, making a total of 60 arrests, issuing 96 citations, and towing 57 vehicles, associated with 41 warrant-related incidents.
