NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police arrest two men after officers witnessed them engage in an alleged drug transaction.

Members of the New Bedford Police Department's narcotics unit were investigating narcotics sales in the North End on Thursday evening when they observed what appeared to be a drug deal between two men in a vehicle parked in the area of Market Basket at 122 Sawyer Street.

After further investigation, police arrested the two men: Victor Matthews, 51, of 251 Purchase Street, Apt. 3, New Bedford, and Jason Oliver, 25, of 207 Caroline Street, New Bedford. Both men face charges of possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute, distribution of a Class D substance, and conspiracy to violate drug laws. Matthews was additionally charged with possession of a Class D substance, subsequent offense.
