NEW BEDFORD — Mayor Jon Mitchell said on Friday that he is hopeful there is a way for the popular annual 50's Night to still take place this summer. Over the past 29 years, thousands of people have gathered to the downtown area for the one-night event.

On his weekly appearance on WBSM, the mayor said his office has been in contact with event organizer Joe Jesus about rescheduling the festivities.

The annual 50's Night was recently cancelled for this year due to a major construction project on Union Street. That's the location where most of the evening's events take place.

Joe Jesus indicted that many of the classic car owners who participate in the event were reluctant to display their car on Union Street due to dust from the construction.

Mayor Mitchell said moving 50's Night to another location in the city was discussed, however that plan did not work out.
