Two Arrested in New Bedford on Firearm and Assault Charges
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — Two young men were arrested by New Bedford Police Tuesday on gun and assault charges.
According to police, officers responded on January 20 to a report of a disturbance at a gas station in the city’s North End.
They arrived and spoke with a person who said they had gone to their apartment complex to retrieve their personal belongings when they were confronted by two males. The individual said they were struck in the face, and as they tried to leave, the two males took out firearms.

Weapons Seized During Investigation
Officers located the two males at an apartment on LaFrance Court. They were identified as Yomar Colon, 17, and Jose Velez, 20, of Providence. They refused to allow police to search the apartment. However, police obtained a search warrant and discovered a Charter Arms .38 special revolver and 50 rounds of .22-caliber long rifle ammunition.
Colon and Velez were arrested and charged with assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm and ammunition without an FID card.
Police Statement and Community Safety
“I want to commend everyone who responded to this incident,” New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody said. “Thanks to their coordinated efforts, two underage individuals in possession of a firearm were quickly taken into custody, ensuring the safety of all involved. This case demonstrates our ongoing commitment to keeping our community safe.”
