New Bedford Repeat Offender Arrested on Gun Charges
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A New Bedford man with a criminal history is under arrest and a gun was taken off the street.
New Bedford Police said that on October 21, detectives were conducting surveillance in the city’s South End when they received information that Guilherme “Gilly” Jalo, 23, of New Bedford had a firearm on him and was in the County Street bar district.
Police said detectives entered the establishment and found Jalo sitting at the bar. He was searched and allegedly found to be in possession of a Lorcin L380 firearm with seven 9mm rounds.
Jalo was arrested and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, possession of ammo without an FID card, and having a defaced serial number on the gun.
Jalo was among 15 people arrested back in late August during a crackdown on the County Street bar district. On that day, he was arrested and charged with selling a woman crack cocaine.
“Both of these cases remain open in New Bedford District Court, along with a case from April during which he provided a police officer with a false name to avoid being arrested on a warrant,” police said in a release.
With his most recent arrest, Jalo now has seven open cases.
"I'm thankful that detectives were able to intercept this firearm before it could be used in an act of violence. Having just been arrested in August for dealing narcotics, I'm disappointed that this man was allowed back onto the street where he is continuing his criminal behavior,” Police Chief Paul Oliveira said.
“Again, my sympathy lies with all the residents and business owners in the County Street bar area who must continually deal with the same individuals causing them problems,” he said.
