NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A New Bedford man was arrested and a firearm seized following a traffic stop on County Street early this morning.

According to New Bedford Police, officers were patrolling the South End at about 2 a.m. today when they observed a vehicle speeding on County Street and going through a red light at the Union Street intersection.

The officers stopped the vehicle and police said that while they were speaking to the driver of the vehicle, identified as Gennys Silverio, 23, he “suddenly shifted into drive and attempted to flee the scene.”

He only made it a short distance before crashing his vehicle into a brick wall on Kempton Street, police said. He then attempted to flee on foot before finally being apprehended by the officers.
