NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford firefighters responded to Reynolds Street early Thursday morning for reports of an apartment fire.

Upon arrival, Engine 7 located a fire in the first-floor apartment and extinguished it with one hose line, preventing fire extension outside the apartment.

According to an investigation, firefighters believe a material explosion had caused the spark. Fire officials said drying polyurethane or oil-based brushes and rags can create heat when mixed with oxygen.

"The safest method to store or dispose of polyurethane or oil-based material is to place it in an airtight metal container outside and a safe distance away from buildings," the fire department wrote.

The building was severely damaged but all tenants were safely evacuated.
