New Bedford Man Dies in Bridge Collision
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The victim in Wednesday’s fatal crash on the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge has been identified.
Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III said that New Bedford Police and EMS responded to a 911 call about a serious motor vehicle crash on the bridge at about 11 a.m. on July 2.
Police arrived to find that a 2015 Chevy Silverado and 2001 Mazda Miata were involved in the crash. According to the D.A.’s Office, the Miata had been traveling over the bridge when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the Silverado.
The driver of the Miata, identified as Gregory Crook McGuire, 41, of New Bedford, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The driver of the Silverado, a 26-year-old man, was transported by EMS for minor injuries.
According to the D.A.’s Office, the Miata suffered “catastrophic damage to the front end of the vehicle,” while the Silverado had “a moderate amount of damage to the front end.”
The crash remains under investigation, although the D.A.’s Office said charges are not anticipated at this time.
It was the second fatal crash on the bridge this year. On February 20, 28-year-old Mason Evich of Fairhaven was killed when the Tesla he was driving was struck and killed by a Chevy Silverado driven by Robert Campbell after Campbell had allegedly been drinking at The Bitter End in Fairhaven, and then left the bar and traveled over the bridge. He was arraigned on June 5 on charges of OUI manslaughter and OUI second offense and is slated to return to court July 21.
