New Bedford’s Dias Field to Be Transformed Into Premier Soccer Complex
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — Dias Field in New Bedford is getting new life following a groundbreaking ceremony marking a new chapter for the former baseball park.
Mayor Jon Mitchell, City officials, and City Director of Parks, Recreation and Beaches Mary Rapoza gathered to address the future of the park, unveiling plans to revitalize the land into the city' first regulation-size soccer field and New Bedford's first mini-pitch, making state-of-the-art soccer facilities available to players of all skills levels in the neighborhood.
"There will be lots of kids that will learn something about themselves here, what a team means, and make memories. That, to my mind, is priceless," Mayor Mitchell said.
Dias Field was previously home to the Greater New Bedford Youth Baseball League, one of the three little leagues in the city.
With the league no longer using the field, it leaves behind a space that needs the city's and community's care and attention.
Two of the four current diamonds will remain for use as softball and youth baseball fields, while the other two will be reconfigured into a first-rate soccer complex.
Since four baseball fields across New Bedford are not permitted by leagues, the City will be able to handle demands for access to diamonds following the Dias Field conversion.
New Bedford's deep Portuguese roots and long-established youth and adult leagues have made soccer a popular sport throughout the city, which Mitchell plans to instill again.
"For generations, Dias Field was bustling with activity and we want to make that happen again," he said. "This project will ensure that Dias Field will be woven into the city's rich soccer tradition."
Shaped like a hockey rink but without the ice, the mini-pitch will have goals built in to the ends of the pitch for an easy-to-play experience.
The fast-paced version of soccer is easily accessible for all skill levels. The mini-pitch project was funded with grants from the National Recreation and Park Association and Musco Sports Lighting.
Overall plans for the park will include a circular walking path around its perimeter, more than 30 new trees planted, and a picnic area. It will be accompanied by bleachers and other amenities, providing an environment for players and the community to enjoy.
Financed by funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, the $1.3 million renovation project is set to be completed by the Summer 2025.
Plans for revitalizing Dias Field is the latest in a long line of improvements to parks and athletic facilities under the Mitchell Administration. Ashley Park, Brooklawn Park and Hazelwood Park have undergone renovation projects.
Athletic fields at New Bedford High, Keith Middle School and Camara Field on Orchard Street have also seen significant upgrades.
