New Bedford Police are investigating after a taxi driver was stabbed in the head.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says just before 10pm Sunday night, police responded to the 400 block of Summer Street where a 35-year-old New Bedford man employed as a driver for Star Cab had reported being stabbed in the back of the head. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The victim told police he was picking up a fare on Smith Street, with the customer requesting the driver by name. When the cab driver arrived, a man approached the taxi and began punching the victim in the head with a knife. He suffered two cuts to the back of the head.

The driver was not able to provide a description of the suspect. The victim's girlfriend, who was in the passenger seat at the time, claimed to be busy on the phone when the assault took place.

Police say the incident appears to be personal in nature and not a robbery attempt.
