New Bedford and Brockton Men Arrested for Striking State Troopers

BOSTON (WBSM) — Massachusetts State Police arrested a New Bedford man and two men from Brockton yesterday after they assaulted officers at a traffic stop in Boston.

According to state police, the incident began on Monday, January 1 at approximately 10:30 a.m., when a trooper observed a black Land Rover on Blue Hill Avenue with no front license plate and dark tinted windows.

After troopers approached the SUV and directed the driver to lower his window, they observed all three males in the vehicle; troopers said they appeared to be “extremely nervous.”

The driver, Tylique Ortiz-Howard, 25, from Brockton, was revealed to have a criminal history of firearms and was asked to exit the vehicle.

Police said that Ortiz-Howard allegedly became hostile, began yelling, and refused to exit the vehicle.

As troopers reached into the driver’s window to open the door, Ortiz-Howard allegedly sped away, causing the door to strike both officers. They did not suffer serious injuries.

According to state police, the passengers also threw items out of the SUV windows as it turned onto Woodhaven Street.

A short time later, the suspect vehicle was spotted by Boston Police in West Roxbury. The parked vehicle was then located behind a Holiday Inn on Ariadne Road in Dedham, where police converged.

At approximately 10:55 p.m., one of the passengers allegedly fled the hotel and was taken into custody. He is identified as Luis Santos, 24, of New Bedford.

On the second floor of the hotel, police apprehended Ortiz-Howard along with the other passenger, identified as Tristan Howard, 21, from Brockton.

The three men were transported to the Norfolk County House of Correction with a $25,000 cash bail.

Ortiz-Howard is charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for police, negligent operation of motor vehicle, number plate violation, window obstruction violation, possession of class E narcotic, marked lanes violation and driving without a license in possession.

Santos and Howard are both charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and accessory after the fact of a felony.
