A group called Environment Massachusetts is beating the drum for the development of offshore wind power.

The group held a news conference in Fall River on Thursday, saying wind power is a healthy alternative to coal fired power plants, and has widespread public support.

Campaign organizer Julia Dougherty says Massachusetts is a perfect location for offshore wind projects. "A whole host of very large tracts of land offshore have been opened up specifically for this purpose, so Massachusetts really has a huge opportunity here and there's a ton of potential for wind power in this state," said Dougherty.

Dougherty says both state and local governments need to take action so wind power projects can getup and running.

Congress she says, needs to authorize renewable energy tax credits, while Beacon Hill lawmakers need to approve legislation to require utility companies to purchase power from offshore wind developers.
