The 2026 Massachusetts Sales Tax-Free Weekend Is Coming Sooner Than You Think
Ready, set, shop till you drop!
Official Dates for the 2026 MA Sales Tax Holiday
The Massachusetts Legislature has set the dates for the 2026 sales tax-free weekend, and it's coming fast. The weekend of Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9 will serve as this year's sales tax holiday.
For years, lawmakers have set aside a weekend during the otherwise slow retail summer season to encourage shoppers to get a jump on their back-to-school shopping while pocketing the usual 6.25 percent Massachusetts sales tax.
Considering you can get a better discount on almost any other weekend of the year, especially in the summer, when most shoppers would rather be at the beach, the gimmick has worked, drawing huge crowds to retail outlets across the Bay State.

Critics say the tax-free weekend merely shifts buying patterns and doesn't really generate much new business activity overall. It's a shoppers' favorite.
What Items Are Exempt From the Tax Break?
For the sales tax-free weekend, the state suspends the sales tax on many items under $2,500. Purchases of motor vehicles, motorboats, meals, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, marijuana products, telecommunications services, natural gas, steam, and electricity are exempt from the tax break.
The Economic Impact of the Sales Tax Weekend
State House News Service reported, "The Department of Revenue estimated that indirect tax revenues generated due to the increased economic activity during the sales tax holiday weekend last year totaled approximately $3.65 million."
"The agency said the holiday resulted in about $36.59 million in forgone sales tax revenue for the state – $24 million of which would have gone into the General Fund, $6.5 million into the MBTA State and Local Contribution Fund, $5.8 million into the School Modernization and Reconstruction Trust Fund, and $82,600 to the Convention Center Fund," according to SHNS.
While you are shopping, be sure to show a little love to your local retailers and not just the big box stores.
