Imagine a time when the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island morph from a deep blue to a red, and Republicans rule the roost instead of Democrats. The conversion may already be in progress, according to data collected by the New York Times.

The Hill reports, "Democrats are sounding the alarm on new data showing they are losing voters to Republicans across the country."

The New York Times report "showed that of the 30 states that maintain voter registration records by political party, Democrats fell behind Republicans in all of them between the 2020 and 2024 elections," according to The Hill, which adds, "In total, Republicans added up to 4.5 million voters compared to Democrats creating a huge hole that could set Democrats back for years."

S.A. McCarthy wrote for the Washington Stand, "The stampede away from the Democratic Party is occurring in battleground states, the bluest states, and the reddest states, too' wrote NYT analysts Shane Goldmacher and Jonah Smith."

McCarthy said Massachusetts and Rhode Island are among the states where Democrats have "seen a sharp decline" in voters registering with their party. McCarthy said the NYT data indicates the decline has been "especially pronounced" in states including Rhode Island, and "significant" in Massachusetts.

Providence-based WPRI 12 reported, "In Rhode Island, the number of registered Republicans has increased by 27% since July 2018," while registered Democrats declined by 6% during the same period.

"Despite these changes, Democrats maintain a substantial registration advantage in Rhode Island, with more than two registered Democrats for every registered Republican," reported the station.

WPRI stated Donald Trump was the first Republican presidential nominee to "crack the 40% threshold since 1988," in defeating Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024.

The station reported that the trend extended "across the border into neighboring Bristol County, Massachusetts, where Trump came within 4,000 votes of winning outright and flipped the City of Fall River to the Republican column for the first time in a century."

A new Morning Consult poll continues to show Trump doing poorly with voters in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
