Massachusetts Fair Was Home to World’s First One-Ton Pumpkin
The season of colorful foliage, cooler nights, spooky happenings and all things related to pumpkins is right around the corner.
As much as we may love the summer months, it's hard to deny all the fun festivities that fall brings.
In the notorious melting pool of everything our coastal state has to offer, here's something you can think about, especially as the fall season slowly make its way into our lives.
Massachusetts is home to the first one-ton pumpkin.
When you think about the Commonwealth, surely pumpkins aren't the first thing that comes to mind. However, it's pretty impressive to know that we live in a place that holds a title as notorious as this one.
So how did Massachusetts gain recognition for this achievement?
The 1984 Topsfield Fair was the launch of the All New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-In, which is still being held to this day.
Although massive pumpkins have appeared throughout the annual competition, it wasn't until 2012 that Ron Wallace from Greene, Rhode Island broke all the previous records.
The homegrown pumpkin he brought in weighed a whopping 2,0009 pounds.
A sight like this is hard even to imagine. Who knows how long Wallace was preparing for this moment, but his dedication to the competition landed him an award that will go down in Massachusetts history.
Wallace even paved the way for future competitors. Since then, the current record for Topsfield Fair's Great Pumpkin Weigh-In is 2,480 pounds by a man from Tyngsboro, Massachusetts.
The first one-ton pumpkin is most likely something you'd never expect to come from the Bay State.
Now that we have this fun fact, it's something you won't forget the next time you order that pumpkin spice latte.
