Mass. AG Office Defends Taxpayer-Funded Travel Amid Fiscal Alliance Scrutiny

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell is under scrutiny for her department's travel expenses charged to taxpayer-funded credit cards.

The Boston Herald reported, "Campbell's office spent more than $800,000 on taxpayer-funded procurement cards (P-cards) just on air travel and luxury out-of-state hotels last fiscal year."

The paper's investigation revealed "numerous expenditures on airline tickets and out-of-state luxury hotel stays," including New York City, New Orleans, Florida's Amelia Island, and elsewhere.

Watchdog Group Demands Greater Transparency

In reaction to the Boston Herald report, the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance (MassFiscal) posted to X, "A.G. Campbell needs to rein in her office's lavish spending and put the interests of the taxpayers ahead of the next luxury junket."

Previous Spending Scrutiny and Past Reports

It's not the first time MassFiscal has questioned Campbell's spending practices. In a July 28, 2025 statement, the Alliance called for "immediate transparency" and a "full accounting" of the costs incurred by her office during FYT 2025.

MassFiscal cited a Boston Herald report detailing nearly $300,000 in charges on state-issued credit cards, "including luxury travel in France, a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands, thousands spent on D.C. hotels, and even a charge at Disney World."

The Attorney General's Official Defense

The Boston Herald reported that in response to the most recent spending concerns, Campbell's office issued a brief statement. "We reviewed the expenditures you flagged and can confirm that they were for legitimate work-related purposes, including depositions and conferences for attorneys," the A.G.'s Office said.
