Two prominent Massachusetts Democratic officeholders have largely sidestepped each other on an issue important to voters: the audit.

Auditor Diana DiZoglio, after failing in her attempt to audit the Massachusetts Legislature, collected signatures and brought the issue before the voters in a referendum question in 2024.

Seventy-two percent of participating voters supported the audit question, yet there has been no audit.

Massachusetts Leaders Continue to Resist Audit Efforts

To date, House Speaker Ron Mariano and Senate President Karen Spilka have resisted the audit, going so far as to suggest they are being bullied, and Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has opted to represent them, rather than the voters, in court.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has avoided discussing the issue, mostly refusing to comment until the courts have had their say.

New Poll Shows Audit Support Remains Strong but Softening

A recent Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll indicates public support for the audit may have slipped. Sixty-four percent of poll respondents still support the audit, saying, "Yes, that is the law now," while 21 percent say, "No, lawmakers have the right to challenge an audit's constitutionality."

According to the poll, 15 percent are undecided.

Could DiZoglio Beat Healey for Massachusetts Governor?

In a hypothetical primary election for governor, the poll asked respondents if they would choose Healey or DiZoglio. Healey garnered 63.2 percent support, and DiZoglio earned 10.6 percent. The poll found 24.8 percent undecided, 0.4 percent desiring another Democrat, and one percent refused to answer the question.

Healey Maintains Strong Approval Ratings

Despite difficult times, Healey still has strong support heading into November's election, as 45.6 percent of poll respondents ranked her job performance as "good" and 29.4 percent as "excellent."
