Market Basket Warns Customers of Facebook Scam
New England-based supermarket chain Market Basket is warning the public of a fake Facebook profile using a store promotion to try and scam customers out of sensitive information.
According to a post on the official Market Basket Facebook page, there is a “newly created and unauthorized Facebook profile” using the Market Basket name and logo to contact customers posing as the official page.
“This (fraudulent) page has been sending friend requests to our customers and has been asking for sensitive information as a requirement to enter our Drink Up, Work Out giveaway,” Market Basket wrote.
The “Drink Up, Work Out” promotion is a joint campaign between Market Basket and Smartwater to promote staying hydrated and active. Participants have the opportunity to try and win new fitness equipment or a gift card.
Market Basket reminded customers that it does not send friend requests or ask for payment information online.
“We ask our community to be vigilant and to not provide this information to other Facebook pages,” the supermarket chain wrote. “The safety and privacy of our customers is very important to us and we are working diligently to address this concern.”
It is good practice for Facebook users not to provide any personal information via Facebook message, even if the message appears to come from a legitimate business page.
