Growing up in Tewksbury, the hometown of Demoulas, the name was synonymous with the grocery store and the super-sized candy bars the Demoulas family would hand out at the front door of their Lowell mansion every Halloween.

In the latest episode, former CEO Arthur T. Demoulas has officially responded to the lawsuit filed against him by the supermarket’s board of directors, and he’s firing back with his own countersuit.
The drama began September 9, 2025, when the board fired Arthur T. right after late-night mediation talks broke down. Just minutes later, the board filed a 35-page lawsuit, claiming the firing was proper and asking a Delaware court to sign off on it. It was a premeditated strike which gave Arthur T. no chance to defend himself before being removed.

Now, Artie has answered the lawsuit and filed a counterclaim. He isn’t asking for money but wants the court to rule the firing illegal and to reinstate him as CEO.
In his filing, Arthur T. says the board made up reasons to get rid of him. His lawyers argue that:
- The board’s “executive committee” was never legally valid.
- Claims of a work stoppage were exaggerated to embarrass him.
- Investigations into his leadership were shallow and biased.
- Some board members pushed mainly for money and power.
- Meeting records were altered to cover up decisions in a major violation of trust.
The filing also mentions tensions with certain family members and the removal of long-time board leaders.
