A 92-year-old man from Marion, Massachusetts, pulled in a big win last week.

Unbeknownst to him, Harry Dasilva's niece had entered him into a contest with Couto Construction.

Each year, the New Bedford roofing company gives away a new roof to a deserving family. After Couto staff heard Dasilva's story, selection of the winner was a no-brainer.

Dasilva is still living in the same Point Road home he has lived in his entire life. He spent his career as a local accountant and went out of his way to help people immigrate to the United States the way his parents immigrated from Cape Verde.

He never married or had children, but spent his adult life caring for his aging parents until they passed away.

In his older years, Dasilva has struggled to keep up with maintenance on his home.  Any homeowner knows that there always seems to be something popping up that needs attention. Those things are much easier to deal with when you have a younger, healthier body or adult children.

In the interest of safety, Dasilva's insurance company recently demanded that he knock down a decrepit shed in his backyard.  Once that was demolished, they asked for another similar shed to be knocked down as well.

When the insurance company demanded that Dasilva's roof be replaced, he didn't know what to do. The veteran is on a fixed income, and it suddenly seemed that he might be forced out of the home he's lived in his entire life.

That's where Couto Construction stepped in. When Couto broke the news to Dasilva and his niece, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. The roof has already been replaced for Dasilva. His prayers have been answered.

Abandoned North Truro Military Base is a Peek Into 1950s Cape Cod

After closing in 1994, the North Truro Air Force Base has been left untouched. Decay, destruction and graffiti have taken over many of the buildings, but some family belongings can still be spotted. The area is now in the possession of the National Parks Service, and according to an update on Atlas Obscura from June 2021, the base had been fenced off and locked tight to visitors hoping to get a glimpse inside the historical Cape Cod site. Luckily, YouTuber @Exploring With Josh took viewers inside the base back in 2015, so we can still take a peek inside the long-abandoned property.
