From Swimming Hole to Community Park: Marion Celebrates DePina Landing
MARION (WBSM) — A special spot in the town of Marion was recently rededicated and celebrated not only for the space itself, but for the generosity of the family that gave it to the townspeople.
On Wednesday, August 14, DePina Landing on River Road was rededicated following the park’s refurbishing. Members of the DePina family were in attendance along with town officials and members of the community.
New Features Added to DePina Landing
The park now features new benches, picnic tables, a celebratory tree and garden, a commemorative plaque, and an interpretive historical sign.
According to the town, a kayak rack will also be installed in the near future.

Community Effort Behind the Renovations
The renovations to the park were “made possible through a collaboration of the Marion Historical Commission, the Department of Public Works, and the Marion Recreation Department, with funds provided by the Friends of Marion Recreation,” according to the town.
“The project was spearheaded by Nancy McFadden, Department of Public Works Director Jody Dickerson, and Marion Historical Commission Chair Meg Steinberg, who recognized the importance of preserving the site’s history while honoring the DePina family’s enduring legacy,” the town stated in a release.
What Is DePina Landing?
The spot in Marion’s Cape Verdean neighborhood was owned by the DePina family, and according to the town, it became a popular neighborhood swimming hole in the 1940s. Meanwhile, other kids would get into the water on a hot summer day by jumping off the Wareham Bridge that crosses Route 6.
From Swimming Hole to Public Park
In order to provide a safer alternative to jumping off the bridge, the DePina family donated the swimming hole land to the Town of Marion in 1953, opening it up for all residents to use. The Buzzards Bay Coalition calls it "a hidden gem for kayakers."
Now, with the new additions to DePina Landing, it has become a park that goes beyond just swimming; it offers a chance to sit, reflect and dive into the connection to the community of this special family.
