U.S. officials are confirming the Malaysian airliner that crashed in eastern Ukraine today was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

Ukraine's government and pro-Russian separatists are blaming each other for the crash that killed 295 people. Vice President Joe Biden said the Boeing 777 was "blown out of the sky."

In earlier remarks, President Obama said U.S. officials are trying to determine if there were any Americans on board.

A Ukrainian official says two Russian military intelligence officers are involved in the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner.

Ukraine's state security chief bases his claims on an intercepted phone conversation between two Russian officers and pro-Russian separatists.

During the recorded conversation one pro-Russian fighter says there's a "sea of women and children" in the wreckage. One of the rebels tells a comrade that a group of fighters had shot the airliner down.

The Ukrainian security chief played another conversation in which a rebel fighter asked what the passenger jet was doing over Ukraine? Another voice replies, quote, "That means they've called up spies. No way to flights. This is war."
