Mmmmm…there’s nothing like fresh, delicious quahogs. Whether you want to shuck them and eat them raw, steam them and drown them in drawn butter, turn them into chowder or make up a batch of stuffies, quahogs are succulent treasures from the sea.

So how the heck are you supposed to get them, anyway?

Well, you could take the easy way out and visit the fish market, but why not learn to quahog with the Buzzards Bay Coalition some upcoming Saturday this summer?

These are free, family-friendly events.

They’ll provide you with the rakes, peck baskets and waders you’ll need (although you’re welcome to bring your own equipment). But keep in mind, unless you have a shellfish permit from the town in which the event is being held, you’ll have to catch and release, but you’ll still learn all the basics and decide you want to get your permit anyway.

July 16 – Burgess Point, Onset (11 am – 12:30 pm; 1 pm – 2:30 pm)
July 30 – Silvershell Beach, Marion (10 am – 12 pm)
August 13 – Fort Taber, New Bedford (10 am – 12 pm)
