Massachusetts lawmakers are hoping to spend as much as $40 million to upgrade the House and Senate chambers at the Statehouse.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo says he's seeking up to $20 million for repairs to the 160-seat House chambers, including what he called wiring and flooring issues.

DeLeo's comments today came after Senate leaders announced a similar $20 million renovation plan.

Senate leaders said the money is needed to make critical repairs including fixing damaged cornices and pieces falling from the ceiling.

Gov. Deval Patrick on Monday told reporters the Statehouse is an historic building and lawmakers have a responsibility to maintain it.

Patrick's own office is undergoing a $9 million overhaul.
