Lakeville Woman Arrested for Manslaughter in Florida Crash
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, F.L. — A Lakeville woman has been arrested in Florida on DUI manslaughter charges after she allegedly crashed a Jeep into a sheriff's deputy, killing him.
According to AP News, 30-year-old Cassandra Smith of Lakeville, MA was booked into the Charlotte County Jail on the manslaughter charges following the crash on I-75 on Tuesday night.
The 23-year-old sheriff's deputy was outside the patrol vehicle on the northbound side of the highway conducting a traffic stop on a different car when he was hit by the Jeep, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
"Earlier tonight while conducting a traffic stop on I-75, one of my deputies was struck by a passing motorist," Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a Facebook live video about the incident posted on Tuesday night.
The sheriff said his deputy was rushed to a nearby trauma center, where they succumbed to their injuries.
"We will not be releasing their name at this time due to the fact that not all the family has been notified," he added.
Smith was not injured and she was booked into the Charlotte County Jail on DUI manslaughter charges, AP News reports.
Prummell said the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
