How much is that doggy in the window? Unfortunately, they're not for sale, but they’re definitely worth a visit!

If you’ve ever strolled down Union Street in New Bedford and spotted two tiny dachshunds in a window, you’ve already met the real stars of The Art Box.

Nestled at 246 Union Street, this custom framing shop, owned by Nick Martin, offers more than just a place to preserve your prized possessions; it’s home to Harley and May, the shop’s official greeting committee and marketing team.

What I'm trying to imply is: if you're a fan of dogs, then you might want to swing by the Art Box.

Meet the Wiener Window Crew

Martin, a Portsmouth, Rhode Island native, opened The Art Box in May 2024, bringing his years of framing experience to New Bedford. But let’s be honest – his two mini dachshunds might be the biggest draw.

“Harley has been with me for nine years,” Martin said. “She’s the marketing manager here. She’ll be the first to greet you and will continue to greet you the entire time you’re here.”

Then there’s May, the newest addition to the team.

“I just got her back in October. She’s a rescue, found running the streets of Springfield, so she’s still got a bit of that street dog in her," Martin said. "She likes to think she’s security and will bark at you, but really, she just wants to say hi.”

The duo holds court in what Martin calls the Wiener Window, a cozy front display featuring dog beds, a mini fireplace, and, of course, some of Martin’s framing work.

“It’s full of dachshunds, art, and warmth – basically their office,” he said. “Honestly, they bring in just as many customers as the framing does.”

A Passion for Framing (and Dogs)

While the dogs might be the shop’s main attraction, Martin’s custom framing skills keep people coming back.

From traditional art and photos to unique pieces like marionette dolls, life preservers, and even a decommissioned AK-47, there’s no challenge he won’t frame.

At the end of the day, it’s about creating a welcoming space for customers and for Harley and May.

“If the lights are on or the dogs are in the window, we’re open,” Martin said.

So next time you’re in downtown New Bedford, swing by The Art Box. Whether you’re looking to frame a cherished memory or just say hello to two adorable dachshunds, Harley and May will be waiting.

If SouthCoast Dogs Had a Dating App, It Would Look Something Like This

August 26 is International Dog Day, and it got me thinking. What if there was a way for dogs to connect with other dogs in the area to make new friends? Or maybe even find love? Twenty-six dogs living on the SouthCoast sent me their profile picture and bio. Let's see the eligible pups.
