
New Study Reveals Where Massachusetts Really Stands on Grocery Prices
If you've ever walked out of Market Basket and wondered how a "quick trip" became $150, the latest rankings of the costliest places in America to fill a grocery cart may not surprise you.
The new study from WorldAtlas.com shows just how expensive a week of groceries has become across the country. Some states actually average over $300 these days.
So where exactly does Massachusetts now rank among the most expensive grocery states?
WorldAtlas' findings show the price for a week's worth of food ranges from a high of $334 to a low of $221 across all 50 states. A huge difference of over $100 between most expensive and least expensive.
The Most Expensive Grocery States
Not too surprising states like Hawaii and Alaska, where the cost of shipping the food factors into its price on the shelf, lead the nation in expensive grocery shopping and both average over $300.

California, Nevada, and Mississippi round out the top five with averages of $297.72, $294.76 and $290.64 respectively.
Where Massachusetts Ranks in the U.S.
While Massachusetts luckily didn't even crack the Top Ten on this pricey ranking, it was listed as New England's most expensive state for groceries.
Sitting at #16 with an average of $271.98 per week for groceries, Massachusetts was 8 states higher and just about $6 more expensive than the next New England state. That was Connecticut at #24 with an average of $265.90.
How New England States Compare
In our corner of the country, New Hampshire has the least expensive groceries. They placed #45 overall with a weekly shopping price tag of $239.33. A big difference from the Bay State.

So SouthCoast shoppers actually aren't imagining things when they feel we live in one of the costliest places to buy food. Not that that's any solace when you're standing at the register.
