NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A New Bedford man was arrested for possessing illegal firearms while on probation as a convicted sex offender.

On Jan. 17, around 6 p.m., a vehicle operated by Alexander Luis Reis, 26, was stopped by detectives as it traveled in the West End. At the time of the stop, Reis was found to have a loaded handgun, police said.

After searching Reis's Sagamore Street residence, police claim they also found an AR-15 rifle. Numerous rounds of various calibers of ammunition also were allegedly found.

Reis was placed under arrest and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license and illegal possession of a rifle and ammunition.

Reis is also a convicted felon and Level 2 sex offender who is on probation.
