More than 700 children in the U.S. have been accidentally poisoned by detergent pods in just two years, after they were mistaken for toys or candy, according to researchers. Most of the children weren't seriously harmed, but one child did die last year, and the most serious complications include coma and seizures.

The researchers said there needs to be safer packaging for the detergent pods, and some detergent manufacturers have already revised packaging and labels to make them safer.

The often multicolored pods contain concentrated liquid laundry detergent, and poisoning or injuries from them include mouth, throat and eye burns when kids burst the capsules or put them in their mouths.
