A statement from the Hawthorne Country Club on Wednesday confirmed that the golf club and function hall is closed.

The statement said "while the business has been successful in many respects, it has proven not to be economically viable."  It said the decision to close was based on "a significant decline in golf interest and participation."

The 56 acre Dartmouth property located on Tucker Road, included a club house, banquet facility and a nine-hole golf course.

The statement also said clients had been notified and deposits had been returned.

Businessman Kevin Santos purchased the property at a bank auction in 2011 for $2.5 million.

WBSM News left messages at Hawthorne and the Waterfront Grille in New Bedford, another property owned by Santos, but the calls were not returned.
