Every year, I look forward to teaming up with Mass Audubon for its annual Duck Derby, where hundreds of rubber ducks race their way down the Slocum River in Dartmouth, all for a great cause.

Unfortunately, Dad duty called this year, and I wasn't able to make it to the big race. As someone who is passionate about clean water, environmental protection, and preserving the beautiful SouthCoast, this is one event that always holds a special place in my heart.

However, the ducks have officially crossed the finish line, and the results are in. Some lucky ducks are celebrating, while one poor little guy might want to work on his swimming skills before next year.

The Winning Ducks of 2026

According to Mass Audubon, the 23rd annual Duck Derby took place on Monday, October 5, after a nor'easter postponed the original race. A total of 1,469 rubber ducks took to the water, but only one could claim the $5,000 grand prize.

That honor went to the duck named “Sox," sponsored by Eric Strand of Marion, who paddled his way into first place. Second place went to “George," sponsored by Jacqualyn Fouse, while “Elvin," sponsored by Sheryl Robinson, rounded out the top three.

Even the Losing Duck Walked Away a Winner

Every race needs a last-place finisher, and this year's unfortunate title of "Slacker Quacker" went to “Webster” the duck, sponsored by Kimberly Poulton. Poor Webster might have finished last, but he still earned his sponsor a Mass Audubon swag bag and free entry into next year's race.

Meanwhile, “Scarlett," sponsored by Jerry Block, claimed the special "Stealth Duck" honor.

The real victory: this year's event raised more than $13,000 to support conservation, wildlife habitats, and environmental education throughout Southeastern Massachusetts.

Also, it’s important to note that every single rubber duck was collected afterward (there’s always one Negative Nancy who asks about this). No plastic or rubber ducks were left behind in our beautiful waterways, and that alone makes some happy.
