Two passersby are credited with saving the life of a man seriously injured in a fiery single-vehicle crash in Lakeville.

Monday night around 10:40 p.m., an SUV crashed into a tree and burst into flames, according to the Lakeville Fire Department. First responders made the six-mile trip in eight minutes and found the driver had been pulled from the burning vehicle by good Samaritans.

“Had these two men not intervened when they did, it is likely we would have a much more horrific and tragic outcome,” said Lakeville Fire Chief Mike O’Brien.

The driver was transported to the trauma center at Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. The name of the driver was not released. The two heroic bystanders did not wish to be named, Chief O'Brien said.

The crash remains under investigation.
