FREETOWN (WBSM) — Authorities are investigating after skeletal remains were found in the Freetown State Forest this morning.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III announced that Fall River Police received a 911 call at about 9:50 a.m. from a hunter deep in the Freetown State Forest who reported finding skeletal remains.

Fall River Police, Freetown Police, Freetown Environmental Police, and the State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office arrived and were directed to a small Honda Accord deep within the forest off an access road.

The D.A.’s Office said first responders located the skeletal remains of two adults in and around the area of the vehicle, along with a suicide note.

The remains were transported to the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner pending autopsies.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

The New Bedford highway murders took place in 1988, with the bodies discovered into 1989. The killer is confirmed to have killed nine women and suspected of murdering at least two more. Although there were at least three different men considered as suspects by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, the murders remain unsolved and the families of the victims are still searching for closure.
