Former Mattapoisett Police Chief Not Guilty of Drunk Driving

Former Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons was found not guilty Friday of operating under the influence following a bench trial in Falmouth District Court.

According to SippicanWeek.com, Judge Thomas Barrett concluded the evidence presented did not prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Lyons, however, was found responsible for a marked lanes violation, and was ordered to pay a $100 fine.

Lyons was arrested on July 17 of last year following a traffic stop on Route 28 in Bourne, when just before 11 p.m. a state trooper pulled her over and administered a field sobriety test after the trooper said she was driving erratically.

She was placed on paid administrative leave and pleaded not guilty to the charges. The following month, she retired early from the police department.

She was a member of the Mattapoisett Police Department for 36 years, with 21 years as chief. She was also the first female president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association.
