Florida’s Hidden Gem Hideaway Serves a Taste of Fall River
Florida is no stranger to SouthCoast transplants. Between snowbirds, retirees, and families chasing sunshine, New Bedford and Fall River accents are practically part of the soundtrack down there. There’s even a dedicated “New Bedford Day” in Florida for locals who made the move south.
Every once in a while, someone stumbles upon something that feels extra personal, like a secret handshake meant only for people who truly get the SouthCoast.
That’s exactly what happened when Diane Ponte of Westport found herself in Port Charlotte, Florida, handling the emotional task of selling her parents’ Florida home. In between paperwork and goodbyes, she decided to treat herself to a meal, and accidentally uncovered a full-on tribute to home.
Inside a restaurant called New England Roadside Grill, Ponte noticed something that immediately stopped her in her tracks: a picture of the Braga Bridge hanging on the wall. At that moment, she knew this wasn’t just another seafood spot.
A SouthCoast Menu, 1,300 Miles Away
From the moment you open the menu, the SouthCoast influence is undeniable. Portuguese favorites sit comfortably alongside classic New England staples, creating a lineup that feels more like Route 6 than Florida sunshine.
Ponte went all in, ordering clam chowder, fish and chips, little necks, shrimp Mozambique, stuffed quahog, and clam cakes – and according to her, “it was all delicious.” Not bad for a restaurant located nearly halfway to Key West.
Even the Drinks Feel Like Home
One of the most unexpected finds was Autocrat coffee milk, a Rhode Island and SouthCoast classic that’s rarely seen on Florida grocery shelves. Seeing it listed felt like a comforting hug to anyone who grew up with it in their fridge.
Fall River Gets Its Own Spotlight
The menu even includes a dedicated section honoring Fall River and Portuguese culture, featuring dishes like the Portuguese Steak Plate and the ultra-specific Fall River–style chow mein plate – a clear nod to the legendary Hoo Lee Chow Mein factory on Eighth Street.
