Firefighters Help Deliver Twins In South End
New Bedford firefighters help deliver two children early Saturday in the South End.
The crew from Engine 6 responded to a medical call on South First Street, and found a woman lying on the floor of her apartment, giving birth to a child.
Lt. Ken Silva says firefighters assisted with the birth along with EMT's. "The baby was premature, we're not sure how far along. the mother said six months, maybe seven, she was a little unsure of that," said Lt. Silva. "She had a pain in her stomach this morning, and the next thing you know the baby was coming out."
He says a firefighter joined the woman in the ambulance and on the way to St. Luke's she gave birth to a second child.. All are now at the hospital.
The conditions of the mother and the newborns are not known, but Silva says they all appeared to be in good health.
