NEW BEDFORD — A Fall River man has been fatally shot in New Bedford in the city's first homicide of 2023.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said 29-year-old Derek Pires died of gunshot wounds at St. Luke's Hospital early Tuesday morning after the Monday night shooting.

New Bedford police responded to the scene at Dartmouth and Dunbar streets after a Shot Spotter gunshot detection at around 10:52 p.m. Monday.

Officers arrived to find Pires sitting in the driver's seat of a black Dodge Charger that was parked on the south side of Dunbar Street, according to D.A.'s office spokesman Gregg Miliote.

Pires was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital with gunshot wounds, but was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

He was the only person in the vehicle, Miliote said.

New Bedford Police confirmed that Pires' death marks the first homicide in New Bedford this year.

Prosecutors with the D.A.'s office homicide unit are investigating along with state police detectives and New Bedford police.
