Fall River Man Arrested in Connection With Shooting

FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A Fall River man with a history of violence has been arrested in connection with a September 18 shooting on Choate Street.

According to Fall River Police, the shooting occurred at about 6:15 p.m. on September 15 in the 100-block of Choate Street. He male victim contacted police stating that he had been shot and was on his way to a local hospital for medical assistance.

Police said the victim, a 42-year-old Fall River resident, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. He said he was shot by a man who was known to him, but police said investigators were not able to determine the identity of the alleged shooter at that time.

However, police said that on Wednesday, September 20, Detective Matthew Gauvin of the Major Crimes Division was able to confirm the alleged shooter’s identity as that of Mohamadou Kante III, 29, of Fall River.

With the assistance of the Middletown and Newport Police, Kante was taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit in Rhode Island.

Following rendition proceedings, Kante is expected to be returned to Massachusetts where he will be charged with assault and battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, firearm violation with two prior violent or drug crimes, carrying a firearm without a license, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

Kante was previously convicted in 2018 on illegal firearms charges and was sentenced to serve four to five years in state prison. At that time, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office described Kante as a “violent gang member” who was convicted of being a Level III Armed Career Criminal.
