FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A former Fall River man was convicted Wednesday of mayhem, armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and sentenced to prison in relation to a 2006 incident in the city.

According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III, Jorge Lamas, 37, was convicted by a jury and sentenced to serve five to seven years in state prison.

Lamas was 18 years old on July 19, 2006, when he orchestrated an attack on a 17-year-old male victim. Lamas was part of a group that lured the victim to a path in the area of the Rolling Green Apartments in Fall River (now known as the Southwinds Apartments) where he was attacked by Lamas and some of the others.

The victim was struck and slashed in the face by Lamas and others, who used four or five beer bottles as weapons. Once the victim was on the ground, he was then punched and kicked by Lamas and other members of the group.

Lamas and another member of the group robbed the victim of his sneakers and his cell phone was stolen as well. Lamas then threatened the victim and told him not to contact the police.

The victim suffered significant injuries, including severe lacerations to his face that required over 40 stitches.

Quinn said the victim was familiar with Lamas and was able to identify him to the police. Lamas then defaulted in May 2008 and fled from Massachusetts. He was apprehended in California in June 2023 and transported back to Massachusetts to face the charges.

“I am pleased that the jury held the defendant accountable for this brutal and senseless act of violence,” Quinn said. “Unfortunately, this case was delayed for 16 years because the defendant fled the City of Fall River and was apprehended in California last year.”
