Fairhaven’s Shepherd Center Looks to Expand Offerings in 2026
The Shepherd Center for the Performing Arts at 34 Center Street in Fairhaven is kicking off its third year of performances and educational activities. The "Shep" is a nonprofit organization that provides an entertainment and educational venue for SouthCoast residents.
Local businessman and founder Bryon Knight is planning some new twists in the coming year. Knight stopped by Townsquare Sunday to offer a preview of what's ahead and reflect on the two years gone by.
Sellout Shows and Growing Support
"It's been like a rollercoaster ride, only the rollercoaster keeps going up," Knight said. "This Greater New Bedford community is absolutely wonderful. We seat 150 people, and we've had a number of sellouts."

Along the way, the Shepherd Center has raised money for a new electrical system and new lighting. Knight hopes to install air conditioning this coming year.
The first big show of 2026 happens on Saturday, January 10 at 7 p.m. Knight is expecting a big crowd for Hot Club Cheese Roll, playing a mix of jazz standards and more contemporary hits. Tickets are now available online at theshepherdcenter.org.
Expanding Beyond Music Performances
The Shepherd Center has hosted many music performances, but is also aiming to expand its programming to include more dance, cinema, and theatre.
"We're not the Zeiterion or the Narrows," Knight said. "We are faith and educationally-based. Yes, we host performances, but we also want people to learn the business of performing arts, like running sound, lighting, and stagecraft. Hopefully, they can volunteer at other venues, or get hired there."
Knight said the Shepherd Center has assembled a team of 100 volunteers. The Center recently expanded its Board of Directors from six to eight members. Knight will soon be stepping down as Board Chairman to become the Center's Interim Director. "I make a really great dictator, but a lousy chairman," he said.
How the Community Can Get Involved
The Shepherd Center also invites the community to join in.
"On Tuesday, the Center hosts a music circle, where folks can bring in their instrument and sing. Often the public comes in and sings along," Knight said. "We have an open mic night on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. These events are free."
"On the 31st of January, we have our first Cinema Short Showcase, featuring short films made by local residents. Each is 15 to 20 minutes long. Come on by and support these folks," he said.
