Attention Kmart shoppers: the Fairhaven store, in business for more than 30 years, is closing its doors in mid-April.

Selectman Charlie Murphy confirmed the news Wednesday, saying he was shocked by the announcement. "I thought they were doing okay in that plaza, so I was a little shocked and sadden to hear this."

Murphy says he'll ask town officials to take steps to hopefully keep Kmart in Fairhaven. "I'm going to put it on the agenda for the next Selectman's meeting," said Murphy. "We'll draft a letter to the Sears Corporation to see if we can keep Kmart."

A spokesman for Sears Holdings, Kmart's parent company told the Standard Time, the decision to close the Fairhaven store was necessary, but difficult. The store will begin a liquidation sale on January 6th.  the spokesman says eligible employees will receive severance. and the chance to apply for openings at other stores.
