Former Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski has been named President of Baseball Operations for the Boston Red Sox.  The Red Sox announced the change Tuesday night.

The current general manager, Ben Cherrington, will stay on to assist Dombrowski during the transition, but is apparently leaving the organization.

Dombrowski was recently ousted from the Detroit Tigers front office.  He also held a similar position with the Florida Marlins, and has spent more than 20 years in the game.

Red Sox Principal Owner John Henry says both he and Tom Werner felt Dombrowski was the right person to lead the team's baseball operations.

Dombrowski said the Red Sox were his absolute first choice to continue his career.  He'll take over immediately.
