The Country Whip Ice Cream Stand in Acushnet had their grand re-opening on Friday after an electrical fire in May forced their closure.

The fire took place shortly before Mother's Day and caused extensive damage, but all repairs were completed this week and owner Amanda McQuillan says that the customers have been coming non-stop.

"We had a line here right at 11, when we opened the doors, and we've had a line ever since so it's been going really well," said McQuillan.

Among those returning was Peter Benoit of Acushnet who came by with his daughter McKenna.

Benoit said that for many in the area it just isn't summer without a visit to the Country Whip.

"This is a summer staple, if not almost a year round staple for everybody, especially if you're in the neighborhood, and today's the grand reopening, and it couldn't have come fast enough."

However, it wasn't just neighborhood folks dropping by.

Ben and Beth Witcher make frequent trips from their Bridgewater home.

In fact, Ben says they even made the trip down the day of the fire.

"We actually drove here the day of the fire to get ice cream and saw all the fire trucks, so we're really happy they're back open."

For Beth this was more than a return to a favorite ice cream joint, it was also a welcome birthday present.

"I'm just glad they're opening on my birthday," said Beth "I only asked for one thing on my birthday, to have this reopen, and it happened."

McQuillan says she looks forward to having the rest of the summer being a successful one and says she hopes that they can extend their seasonal operation to just before Thanksgiving.
