Everyone is a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, and on March 17, people will paint the town green as they celebrate the 1,000-year-old tradition.

Some will gravitate to the Jameson while others will adorn themselves in green attire, but the true celebrators of St. Patrick’s Day will eat lightly for the day in anticipation of the hearty meal to come: corned beef and cabbage.

What Is St. Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick’s Day is an annual celebration on March 17 that honors the death of St. Patrick in the fifth century. According to the History Channel, the Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years during the Christian season of Lent, where families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon.

“Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage,” the channel noted.

Celebrating Tradition With Corned Beef

Enjoying corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day is as traditional as it gets, but I have to be honest. Corned beef and cabbage is not for me.

I don’t know if it’s the strong smell or the salty taste, but I'll be quicker to grab a Guinness during my St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

However, if you are like my Fun 107 morning show cohost Michael Rock, and your mouth waters at just the thought of corned beef and cabbage, then keep scrolling for 25 SouthCoast spots that will be serving up this St. Patrick’s Day treat on March 17.
